Long Weekend in Wine and Spa Complex Starosel, Bulgaria

Located in Central Bulgaria, Wine and SPA Complex Starosel is an oasis you'll want to go back to again and again.

Friday: Take an early morning flight from Gatwick Airport we landed in Sofia just after 11:00. The pictureque car journey to Starosel takes about two and а half hours. About 1:30pm you could be taking in the magnificent views, the lovely garden with beautiful peacocks trawling around and SPA included in the price of the room. Remember to book wine and rakia tastings for your stay.

About 3km from the complex an Ancient Trecian Temple is waiting to be found. Walking there, listening to the birds and admiring the view from the top of the hill is the perfect way to spend a warm summer afternoon.

Once back in the hotel, take a refreshing shower and enjoy a delicious dinner featuring typical local cuisine of grilled meats and fresh vegetables. Don't miss the chance to try the house wines as they're only offered in the hotel restaurant.

Saturday: Enjoy buffet breakfast at the restaurant or on the balcony. Once again included in the price of the room, you can pick from fresh fruit, jams, cereals, toast, frankfurters, sausages, scrambled or fried eggs, typical Bulgarian banitsa and many more.

Spend the rest of the morning enjoying the mineral water pool boasting a hydro massage, jacuzzi and a water 'volcano'. Take the rays in on the sunbeds or alternate the sauna with the cold plunge pool next to it. The poolside bar offers drinks and ice cream to keep you cool in the heat.

After a delicious lunch at the restaurant you could go back to the pool or drive to Hisarya. Only about 10km away from Starosel, the small resort town famous for its dozen mineral springs and pre-historic Thracian and Roman remains.

Sunday: After breakfast, have a walk around Starosel's zoo where you can feed the beautiful deer. Spend a few more hours by the pool or try some of the SPA treatments offered. Have a relaxing massage followed by a light lunch. If you don't feel like laying to the pool you can enjoy a game of mini golf, pool or darts.

In the evening enjoy a tasting of the winery's award-winning wines and don't miss the chance to try rakia - Bulgaria's typical alcoholic drink. Follow the road of grape to bottle and taste 3, 5 or 7 of Starosel's wines accompanied by complementing bite-sized snacks.

Monday: After breakfast drive back to Sofia Airport. In case you are catching an early flight ask the restaurant staff to prepare you sandwiches the night before. They are always more than happy to accommodate.
