Last week I went to see the long awaited Little Black Jacket exhibition in pictures by Karl Lagerfeld at the Saatchi Gallery, London. Even the entrance has the Chanel feel. A sleek black column with simple white lettering. "Simplicity is the keynote to all true elegance" as Mademoiselle Chanel once said. I walk in the minimalistic and modern Saatchi Gallery, go to the second floor and enter the world of Chanel. Walls and walls of pictures.
But not just portraits of people, images of personalities, of moods, of captured moments. Innocence and seduction, drama and serenity, passion and indifference all gathered together in absolute harmony. The little black jacket has so many faces, it doesn't overwhelm, it accepts the wearer's personality, becomes a perfectly tailored part of it. According to Coco Chanel if you "dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman." The little black jacket is the epitome of impeccably, it make's a personality shine trough, it makes a woman remembered.
This exhibition isn't just a tribute to an iconic garment, it is not just a demonstration of Karl Lagerfeld's styling and photography talent. It is another proof of Coco Chanel's genius. Only this legendary woman could create a piece so timeless to withstand the test of time and look just as modern today as it did so many years ago. The Parisian chic and absolute elegance capture the essence of Chanel. In those rooms of the Saatchi Gallery, between the walls of pictures, Chanel's spirit was alive.
