The Great Designers: Haider Ackermann
Born in Santa Fe de Bogotà, Colombia, he was adopted by a French family and grew up moving around the globe, due to his father's work. He's one of the brightest stars of the famous Antwerp's Royal Academy and started his career as an intern at John Galliano's Paris office. Encouraged by his friends, he presented his first, self-financed women's collection in Paris for autumn/winter 2002. His subtle and sensuous clothes immediately got the attention of buyers and editors. Just two weeks after his debut the man was hired as the head designer for Ruffo Research.
The success of Haider Ackermann was immediate and it's growing bigger with every collection. He says he can't define his signature designs because it's still too early for that. The artist is in constant search. His favorite elements include muted non-colors, the smock, the timelessness, the masculinity... The talented designer is still waiting for the feeling of a masterpiece, of a favorite.
He's ultimate goal is to find the right balance. Inspired by contrasts he doesn't have a particular person in mind when working. It's more abstract for him, a gesture, an attitude, a passerby. Ackermann says that you can only design what you know and that there's no distinction between you and your memories, your experiences and your daily life. It is all attached to his work.
For him designing is difficult. It puts him in doubt, in a situation where he's not confident with himself, but it also challenges him and driven by the unknown, the dissatisfaction. He keeps looking for real beauty and to him that is the intriguing that makes your heart beat. I cannot think of a better definition? Can you?
For Haider Ackermann the greatest influence to his career were his friends who pushed him and encouraged him to start his own label. No wander the most important lesson he's ever learned in life is the richness of friendship.
" Never stop challenging yourself! Never loose enthusiasm! " ~ Haider Ackermann
